Malvern man attends
college; Discovers college is hard; Quits.
As a
finished product of the Malvern School District, Drew Stephens graduated in
1998 following years of intense study with maths and sciences. He finished
slightly above the mid-upper-inner region (middle) of his class, and thereupon
began his pursuit of a Bachelors degree from the University of Henderson
State. High School instructors
tend to offer an assumption that K-12 institutions turnout yearly allotments of
shining gems, eager to take on the world.
As it turns out, Drew Stephens learned that he was yet a chunk of coal, unchallenged
and unaccustomed to the heats and pressures of valid scholasticticity.
During
the month of November, Drew Stephens will present a personal collection of
student work along with exhibits of various personal projects for an assigned
student show. As of press time,
Drew was yet undecided on a choice of theme; still wavering back and forth on
the exact title of his presentation.
Assuredly though, he informs us that such an event, if it were to be
approved by the necessary faculty, will either be entitled:
A) “Drew Stephens.
This is what he has done.”
or:
B) “Well I didn’t do anything, did I?”
Open to
the general public, the show will show, case several pieces of graphic design
work, most of which are direct results of academic assignments, few of which ever received acceptable
grades, and many of which are just plain nauseating to look at. In addition to the minimal amount of
actual “design” pieces (works created for the commercial arts),
sloppily-mounted photography will also be on display, showcasing groundbreaking
advances Drew made while relying on the automatic settings of his mid priced
Canon SLR.
“What we
have as a student in Drew Stephens,” said an unidentified professor, “is an
ideal example of just how far the equipment alone can take you. …His (deleted expletive) student
exhibition will certainly speak for that.
What we’ll have is a wonderful example to show our incoming freshman
Digital Design class. We can point
to Drew’s work and logically assume where he’ll end up as a direct result. And
we can say, this is what can happen.”
Drew’s
multi-faceted/diversified/generally aimless skill set encompasses design in
print, web, and most recently video.
A smattering of such works can be found by visiting Drew’s online
portfolio at www.thisisdrew.com/portfolio. Anonymous works of graffiti at several undisclosed locale
have proven too problematical to suitably document or display in such an
exhibition, so logically we are told that such pieces will not be included in
the show.
On November
23, the exhibition will be available free of charge to the general public, beginning with an opening reception at
6:15 am, atop the second floor of Huie Library on the campus of Henderson State
University. Chilled water will be
served to all who furnish their own cups.
Bring chips. The elevator is scheduled for maintenance at 6:20, so all
attendees are advised that stairs must be used upon a time of desired exit.
